Calendar Art ready to view

Room 9 students have been busy producing wonderful art work for the School Community Group's calendar fundraiser.  The finished art work can be viewed in class or you can see a preview of your child's art on the following slideshow.

An order form and price list should have come home with your child this week.  Please let me know if you didn't get one.  Orders can be placed in class any time before the end of next week - Friday, 4th September.

Thank you for supporting this popular fundraising event.

Pests and Predators - get out and stay out!

We have been very busy learning about the pests we have in New Zealand and what we are doing locally to help keep them OUT.

Over the last few weeks we have been very lucky to have some experts come in to Room 9 to talk to us.  Sally, from Department of Conservation, talked to the Pohutukawa Syndicate about the pests we have in New Zealand.  She brought in some furry creatures (stuffed variety) and some real traps to show us how DOC are trying to reduce this problem.  We had many questions for her and the children were very engaged and interested in what Sally had to say.

Then, we had Jesse and his dad Andrew share some great photos about the good work they do when they go trapping in the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.  What an amazing job you and the other volunteers do which is helping keep those pests at bay while the fence is being built.

We did our own investigation around Nelson Central School and laid some tracking tunnels to see what we have in our 'back yard'.

Check out this slideshow of these events.

Visitors to Room 9

On Wednesday Room 9 hosted four visitors who are in New Zealand to study our language and the Edncation System.  They are based at NMIT with the ELTO programme.

Our visitors were from Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Mianmar and were very friendly.  We enjoyed sharing some of our writing and the classroom displays, as well as trying to teach them our command song in Te Reo Maori.

Fin wrote a recount of their visit.  "Yesterday some people came from NMIT.  They spoke differently because they were from a different country.  I couldn't understand what they were saying."

Room 9 students were wonderful hosts and I think this photo shows how welcome we made them feel!

Fun Day Friday - Brain Box a hit!

This week, on fun day Friday, Room 9 booked out the school's Brain Box sets for Discovery Time.  This allowed the students to test their thinking skills.  It was pleasing to see other key competencies, such as managing self and relating to others, being used during this time as students helped each other and problem solved.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori

This week New Zealand celebrated Maori Language Week.  In Room 9 we entered a challenge (wero) to produce a movie about counting from 1 to 10.  It was great fun making it.  Check out our acting skills and counting in te reo Maori.

Rise to the challenge at home and see if you can introduce Te Reo into your vocabulary.  Here are a few images of useful words you might use.
