Powhiri for our new principal, Mrs Pip Wells

Here is the waiata (and a video of Te Pouahi performing it) we will be singing on the first day back after the holidays to welcome the new principal to our wonderful school.  I hope you have chance to do some more practice so we sound great at our Powhiri.

Queen Bee Blues

The Dolphin reading group and some students from the Turtles were very well prepared for their performance of the Queen Bee Blues on the last day of term.  Unfortunately we didn't have time for the other two performances but will be saving them for the beginning of term four, so keep practising.

Masked Parade coming up fast!

We have been very busy creating masks for the Masked Parade as well as learning songs and actions that we will be performing next term on Friday, 16th October.  The theme is the World of Books and we are very excited to portray Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Room 9's trip to Brook Waimarama Sanctuary

We had a successful day at the wonderful Nelson resource of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.  Thank you to Rick and his team for making it a memorable day for the Nelson Central School students.  We had an amazing learning experience to finish off our Înquiry topic on pests and predators.

We have helped with a donation towards the massive task of erecting a fence all around the boundary to make sure those pests GET OUT and STAY OUT!!

Cawthron Science and Technology Fair 2015

This week Room 9 students entered their dinosaur fossil cases at the Cawthron Institute's Science and Technology Fair at Founders Park.  Three of our students represented the class with our project and were responsible for talking to the judges about our learning and the technological process they followed when making the cases.  Well done to Eva, Juno and Zoe who did a wonderful job of speaking about the class project to the judges.

The project is on display this week at the Energy Centre in the grounds of Founders Park and can be viewed by parents and the public during the following times:

Thursday 24th September, between 10am and 6pm
Friday 25th September, between 10am and 2pm.

The Museum comes to Room 9

How lucky were we last Tuesday when Nicki offered to come to Room 9 to save us all getting wet when we were due to walk to the Museum.

Nicki shared lots of information about the glorious stained glass window that you find at our very own Nelson Provincial Museum.  The window portrays New Zealand's native birds and animals and Nicki explained how the window was made, by following a number of very intricate processes.

We then chose one of the images from the window and copied it onto black cartridge paper before cutting shapes inside it to create our own stained glass window.  Thanks Nicki for a really fun session.

Visitor to Wa Whanau

We had an interesting visitor to Wa Whanau today when we went to Room 11.  Lucy's dad, Josh, volunteered his time and came to talk to the Syndicate about what he does.  He is a scientist with a very important job.  Josh 'hunts' for keas.

He showed us all his special equipment he uses to track down the keas' nests.  We found out that a kea lives in a cave, not in a tree!

We also discovered how to tell the difference between a young kea and mature kea as well as hearing the sound of their call.  Josh tags the keas he finds and this allows him to monitor where they go.  It has been proven that where more traps are laid a larger number of keas live.  Less traps means more pests which means less keas.

Thank you Josh for sharing your expertise.

Wacky Hair Day & Roger Saunders Story Teller

We've had two exciting Friday's in Room 9. Last week we came to school with Wacky Hair!!  This was to raise money for some sensory equipment that is needed for students with special needs.

Then today we were treated to Nelson's favourite story teller, Roger Saunders.  He captivated the audience in a very hot Arts Centre.  What a lovely way to finish off the week!

Fun Day Fridays on PhotoPeach

We worked together to write about the visit from Roger Saunders, the Story Teller.  Here is what we wrote.

On Friday Room 9, our Syndicate and some younger children listened to the story teller, Roger Saunders.  Roger told us two long stories.  One was about a woman and a sausage on her nose who met a magical little green creature who borrowed a saucepan.  The stories were exciting and silly and we were glad to be sitting on our own cushions.  The temperature was extreme.  Hotter than boiling lava!  We loved the stories he told.  Roger did an outstanding job!

Happy Father's Day to all the Room 9 dads

Room 9 would like to wish all the dads out there a very special Father's Day on Sunday.  Hopefully your child spoils you and takes good care of you on this day.  I look forward to hearing all the children's stories on Monday.

If you get a chance, call in to the classroom next week to admire your portraits and pieces of writing your child has created!
