Welcome to Week 9 of Term 4
CLASS
TREAT
The children are having a
class reward this week as they have earned 100 scales on their chart. They have voted to have a Teddy Bear’s Picnic
at Fairfield Park with our buddy class.
We are working out which day, this week, will be the best option and
will let you know. You are more than
welcome to join us. It is possible we
will also watch the Matilda movie as we will be finishing our novel soon. This is a PG movie. Please let me know if you have any objection
to your child watching this movie.
ARTWORK
AND BOOKS
Please provide a reusable
bag by the end of this week, clearly named so your child can bring home their
books and artwork next week. Thank you.
SUMMER
SOUNDS CONCERT - TONIGHT
Doors open at 5.30pm for
the Summer Sounds Concert. Please go
along and support the NCS choir and bands tonight for a gold coin donation at
The Granary, Founders Park, starting at 6pm.
SWIMMING
The children have been
really enjoying swimming this week and the temperature of the pool has been in
the 20s. Please send your child to
school with their swimming things every day.
We have some timetabled swims, but will need to be flexible as we have a
busy last but one week to negotiate!
POHUTUKAWA’S
BIG DAY OUT
Thanks to the families who
have paid $3 towards the Syndicate’s Big Day Out. We have had lots of parents offer to
help. If you have yet to return your
permission slip, please do so and indicate if you can help for some or all of
the day. Thanks a lot.
SPELLING
This is the final spelling
push – Essential List 4. Please support
your child to revise the words from this list that they are unsure of. The test will be this Friday.
LIFE
EDUCATION BUS
I
hope your child has let you know the learning we received from Harold the
Giraffe and the Life Education Bus last week.
Our sessions were all about food and nutrition and how we need a variety
of foods and a balanced diet to give our bodies the energy we need to live life
to the full. Ask them about the food
pyramid and how much sugar can be found in some very popular food. *************************************
Welcome to Week 7 of Term 4
SWIMMING
As
from next week we have sessions booked in the pool, weather and temperature
permitting. These sessions are primarily
building water confidence. Let me know
if there is anything I should be aware of.
Please ensure your child brings togs and a towel to school from next
week. Our swimming days are Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Fridays.
POHUTUKAWA’S BIG DAY OUT
Our
Big Day Out to celebrate the end of the year has been planned for Monday, 14th
December. We will be spending the
morning at the Botanics with the Sport Tasman Trailer, followed by lunch at the
Queen’s Gardens and then a swim at Riverside Pool. We do require parent helpers for the day’s
events. We also require students to pay
$3 towards the cost of the day. Thank
you for your support and please see me if you are able to help for some / all
of the day.
LIFE EDUCATION BUS
Thank
you to everyone who has paid $4 for our sessions next week on Food and
Nutrition. Please ensure you have paid
the office by the end of this week if you have not already done so.
BROOK WAIMARAMA SANCTUARY
The
children have been told of a Christmas competition being run by the BWS. Some have chosen to spend their time at
Discovery Time to create a Christmas decoration for the competition. Here is the link if you would like to enter
from home - http://www.brooksanctuary.org/news/exciting-christmas-competition
THE BIG GIVE
A Nelson charity – the Fifeshire Foundation – has
asked if the children can give something at Christmas time to children less
fortunate than themselves. If you can
support this great cause please bring to school a brand new item, such as a
toy, game or book to donate to the Big Give.
Welcome to Week 6 of Term 4
Today we are having a new student join Room
9. Alaula will be moving from Room 11
for the rest of the year. We want to
welcome her and her family to our team and I am sure the children will make her
feel very at home.
LIFE EDUCATION BUS
Please
make sure you have paid $4 to the office or on-line for Room 9’s sessions as
soon as possible.
SPELLING
Before
the end of term I will be testing the class on the Essential Lists in order to
provide information to their new teacher.
From next week there will be no spelling words sent home so please focus
on the words your child does not know from Essential Lists 1 – 4.
BIG DAY OUT
To
celebrate the end of the year Pohutukawa Syndicate will be having a Big Day
Out. This will be held on Monday 14th
December and we are planning to go to the Botanics for fun games with the Sport
Tasman trailer, followed by lunch in the Queens Gardens, before finishing the day
with a swim at Riverside Pool. There
will be a small cost for the swim and a notice will be sent out soon with
details.
SWIMMING
Tony
has been working tirelessly to prepare the pool for swimming. We are hoping it will be ready by next week
and as soon as the temperature gets warm enough we will be starting our
swimming programme.

Over
the last few weeks we have been making patterns. Your child is going to be a

pattern that repeats around a central point). One place to look for these is in
wallpaper or tiling. Please ask them to explain what is happening in the
patterns they find.

This Friday the Pohutukawa teachers
are providing an orphan’s lunch to any students in our Syndicate who would like
to bring in a donation of between $2 and $5 (or more if you can afford) which
will go directly to the orphanage. This
is a great alternative to the Food for Thought fundraiser if your child isn’t
too keen on rice or getting sponsorship is difficult. We ask that children wishing to participate
bring a bowl and spoon to school. Thank
you for your support.
SCOOTER
SAFETY
Scooter Safety sessions will be held on
Tuesday and Wednesday (starting tomorrow).
If you are able to provide a scooter and helmet for these days we would
really appreciate it.
SCG
QUIZ NIGHT
This is being held a week tonight at the
Speights Ale House. Please see me if you
would like to be part of the “unbeatable” Room 9 team. The cost is $10 per person and food and
drinks are available to purchase on the night.
See the separate notice for further details.******************************

FOOD
FOR THOUGHT FUNDRAISER
Hopefully you have all received the notice
regarding the Food for Thought fundraiser.
The children collect sponsorship to eat meals like the children from the
orphanage in Cambodia. This is a really
worthwhile cause, with ALL money going directly to the orphanage – Centre for
Children’s Happiness. Please have a look
at the NCS Blog site for more information - http://foodforthoughtncs.blogspot.co.nz/

keeping safe on and around the road.

The Pohutukawa Syndicate is in training for
the School’s Cross Country Race on Friday, 12th June. We will be having practices straight after
lunch on Mondays to Thursdays so please make sure your child has suitable

HAPPENINGS
NEXT WEEK
Next week we have a few things on. On Monday I will be attending a course on
Dyslexia. On Wednesday and Thursday we
will have our final hockey skills sessions.
Cross country will still be happening so appropriate footwear is
essential!!
On Friday we have been invited to attend a
Dogsmart Education Programme taken by the NZIACO at the Masonic Hall. If there are one or two parents who would be
free to walk with us at 1.15pm, returning to school at 2.30 it would be
appreciated.
Welcome to Week 2 of Term 2
I hope you all enjoyed your longer weekend
and commemorated the ANZAC in some way on Saturday.
CLASSROOM
BLOG
Please take time to check out our
Blog. The notices, spelling words, basic
facts and lots of other information are all displayed here. The link is on the side of every newsletter,
or you can follow the link through the school website.
Some of you have been having trouble
leaving a comment. In the drop down box
you can choose the “anonymous” option, but please “sign” your comment with your
name so I know who is making it. By
doing it this way there is no need for you to have a Google Account. I look forward to seeing lots more comments
this term. J
SPELLING
This term spelling is being run a little
differently. The students will still
come home with their spelling books at the start of the week and be tested on a
Friday. The words will be focused on a
phonics sound and spelling rule. I have
set the classroom up with an on-line spelling programme called Spelling City so
the children can practice on line if they have access to the internet. They can also test themselves on the weekly
words. I will reward students who get
100% with a scale for their fish chart.
HOCKEY
SKILLS
This week we will have our first two
sessions of hockey skills, which is a school wide programme. Please make sure your child comes to school
on Wednesday and Thursday with suitable footwear. Trainers are ideal. We will be having two more sessions in Week
4.
If you have any
questions or concerns, please let me know.

around their learning and social needs.

quickly. I will let you know how much we
raised for this worthy cause as soon as it’s announced.
SWIMMING
The
pool is officially now closed until next summer. We enjoyed an extra long summer session with
the majority of children loving the regular swims.
CLASSROOM BLOG
I
endeavour to update the Blog with the “goings on” of Room 9. It’s a great way for relatives (and you) to
keep in touch with the class. Have a go
at making a comment to show you have read the posts. Over the holidays I will be trying to upload
some links to educational games we recommend, so your child can practice
his/her literacy and maths skills.

along some pocket money to spend on the stalls.

SPELLING
/ BASIC FACTS
In your child’s Home / School Communication
Book you will find the results of their spelling test and Basic Facts
test. It’s great to see many children lift
their scores in Basic Facts. The
children must answer as many equations as they can in a specified time. The secret to basic facts is that they recall
the answer within 3 seconds and not have to “work it out”. Please continue to support them to do this
homework.
EMERGENCY
SUPPLIES
Thank you to all of you who have brought in
a can / bottle of water to contribute to the school’s emergency supplies. If you have yet to do so, please send along
an item with your child and place it in the box at the front of the classroom.
EMAIL
CONTACT LIST
I have sent out an email this weekend to
‘test’ my contact list. Please let me
know if you did not receive anything, or you wish for a different email address
to be used. This will be for class trips
/ notices / reminders throughout the year.

ROUTINES
Our literacy programme will start properly
from this week. Your child should have
brought home his / her spelling book.
Inside you will find guidance on how best to support your child in
learning their words. The book is to come
back to school on Friday and your child will be tested on how well they know
the words.
The Home/School Communication book will
have a Basic Facts sheet that your child completed today. This is a timed exercise and the idea is that
your child learns the sums so that they can recall them instantly. By learning one fact each night that they got
wrong / didn’t answer, will improve their score.
EMERGENCY
SUPPLIES
Thank you to all of you who have brought in
a can / bottle of water to contribute to the school’s emergency supplies. If you have yet to do so, please send along
an item with your child and place it in the box at the front of the classroom.
MEET
THE TEACHER
It was lovely to see many of you at the
Meet the Teacher evening last week. If
you were unable to attend, I am happy to forward the power point presentation
to you via email. I am also looking for
parents / grandparents who can spare some time in the classroom. This might be to listen to readers, gluing or
sharpening, or lending a hand at Discovery Time. Please let me know if you are interested.**************************************

2.30pm Thursday, 5th March
READING
I hope your child enjoyed sharing their
poetry with you this weekend. Reading
groups will start properly this week so please ask your child to share their
reading book with you. It is common for
children to lose their confidence / slip back over the holiday break. If your child has a book at a lower level
than last year, please do not be concerned.
The book should be easy for your child to read and if you have any
concerns or questions, please let me know.
SPELLING
More testing was being carried out today
and your child will be placed in a group following these results. Information on how best to assist your child
to learn their spelling words can be found in the spelling book they will bring
home. This needs to be returned to
school on Fridays, when there will be a test to see how well they have learned
the words.
EMERGENCY
SUPPLIES
NCS is asking for families to donate
a 420 gram can of baked beans, spaghetti, or fruit, or a 2 or 3 litre
bottle of water, in order to replenish our emergency supplies. Please bring this into the classroom as soon
as you are able to.
